Maple Leaf Spirits

location_onPenticton, Okanagan Valley

Maple Leaf Spirits is a piece of BC distilling history perched on the celebrated Naramata Bench above Penticton. Founded by Jorg and Anette Engel, the distillery earned its licence in 2004 and began operations in 2005, making it BC's oldest distillery still owned by its founders and a founding member of the province's craft distillers guild. That deep experience shows in the bottle. The Engels specialize in European-style fruit spirits and brandies made from local fruit and wine: Swiss-style Kirsch, Pear Williams eau-de-vie, cherry and stone-fruit liqueurs, pommes brandy and a small-batch gin. Their flagship "Lady of the Cask" wine brandy has been recognized as a standout at Canadian artisan spirit competitions, a testament to the patience and craft behind every cask. A visit to the tasting room is intimate and educational rather than flashy. You can sample across the range and learn how each spirit is made, with tours available in English, German or French, reflecting the Engels' European roots. Booking ahead is recommended so they can give you their full attention. The Naramata Bench setting is reason enough to come: rolling vineyards, lake views and a string of wineries and farms make this one of the Okanagan's most scenic touring corridors. What makes Maple Leaf worth a stop is the chance to taste true artisan brandies and eaux-de-vie, a category still rare in Canada, from the people who helped pioneer craft distilling in the province. If you love fruit-forward spirits, kirsch, or a beautifully made brandy and a story to go with it, this longtime family distillery is a memorable detour on any Penticton or Naramata itinerary.
