Little Farm Winery
Cawston, Similkameen Valley
Little Farm Winery is a small, thoughtful producer at 2155 Newton Road in Cawston, in the Similkameen Valley, a rugged, wind-swept corridor southwest of the Okanagan that has become known as one of Canada's organic farming capitals. True to its surroundings, Little Farm describes its people as winegrowers rather than winemakers, favouring a low-intervention approach that lets the character of the site speak. The home vineyard, the Mulberry Tree Vineyard, is farmed organically and has been certified organic since 2014, and the winery's focus is unusually disciplined: Riesling and Chardonnay lead the way, made in a style the winery sums up as wines of bright freshness and minerality, food-friendly wines with intensity but only moderate alcohol. Current releases include Pied de Cuve bottlings of Riesling, Chardonnay, and an orange wine, the latter popular enough to sell out.
Visiting Little Farm is a fittingly intimate experience. The tasting room operates seasonally from roughly May to October, Thursday through Sunday from 10:30 am to 5 pm, with walk-in tastings of five wines offered for a modest fee that includes a complimentary glass. For a deeper dive, the winery offers a vineyard tour led by Master of Wine Rhys Pender, an intimate walk-and-taste for groups of two to six. A wine club featuring library wines aged five or more years rewards patient drinkers. Set among the orchards, organic farms, and dramatic mountain walls of the Similkameen near Cawston and Keremeos, Little Farm is an essential stop for travellers drawn to honest, terroir-driven wines, and a perfect counterpoint to the bigger estates of the neighbouring Okanagan Valley.
